The Faithful Few

workwithOne of our goals in women’s ministry is to serve and build up the women of our church body. As we plan for Bible studies and others women’s events for the coming year, we try to consider women in all stages and walks of life: younger women or older women; women who are single and those who are married; career women or stay-at-home moms; women with special needs, etc.  As much as possible, we want our studies and events to be all-inclusive, open and applicable to all women. To that end, last year we added two regular Saturday morning events during the year, hoping to draw in those women who are unable to join us for events taking place during the week. Also, for that reason, the same women’s Bible study is offered both morning and evening to accommodate working women and stay-at-home moms. Our prayer is that the options available would draw in women “on the fringes.”

But at a recent leadership meeting, we were encouraged with this:  “Work with what you have.”  Yes, we want our women’s ministry to accommodate as many women as possible. We want to be continually drawing new women, helping them get excited about the Word of God and the fellowship and accountability of studying in a group setting with other women. We need to be inviting and encouraging women to attend. However, our focus should be on those who are coming, who have already shown their desire to grow spiritually by being there.

I think of Jesus, who ministered to all who came his way.  But His efforts were centered on the 12 men the Father had given Him to disciple and prepare and raise up.

If God has given you five women who consistently attend your Bible study, work with them. Teach them. Disciple them. Encourage them. Concentrate on depth of ministry, not width.  Work with what you have.

Put Prayer on the Agenda

Have you ever been at a meeting where you talked about the need to pray the entire time, but then ran out of time to actually pray? When our women’s leaders get together for our monthly meeting, we have found it useful to have an agenda printed out prior to the meeting.  There are many great reasons to create an agenda for the meeting.  Women’s Ministry Toolbox recently had a blog which addressed the need for an agenda.  I think the main points were well covered there.

But I’m going to add one thing that should always be on your agenda….prayer.  Intercessory prayer should be a priority on the schedule at each meeting.  Prayer for your meeting, prayer for your women and upcoming ministry events and prayer for one another.  We have a very precious two hours allotted for our meeting, and the minutes can fly by with business we need to discuss.  If we are not careful, it can be time to close and we barely have five minutes left for prayer.

Put prayer on the agenda; allot time for it at the beginning of your meeting.  It is the most important item on the agenda!

Numbers Aren’t Everything!

We just had our first women’s event of the new year.  Some say it was scheduled a little too close to the holidays.  I don’t know if that was true–we scheduled it early in the year in order to “start the new year off” with a special time of ministry.  We had planned a lovely “mug and muffin brunch” with a guest speaker.  But sign-ups were low.  Perhaps it was too close to December and all of the busyness and traveling associated with the holidays.  Maybe we missed some opportunities to promote the event, but we made up for that with personal invitations by mouth and via email. Nevertheless, attendance was less than two-thirds that of a similar event held in August.

We prayed diligently for the event and those attending, we had bulletin announcements and talked about the event with those we ran into at church.  Perhaps we could have done more.  As women’s ministry leaders, we will discuss what could have been done differently. But you know what?  In the end, those who were meant to be there were there.  After you have done all you know to do, you need to leave the results up to God.  This is true in our own lives, but also true in ministry.

Our event was a huge blessing to those who attended, and God moved among us in a very special way.  Numbers aren’t everything!

Christmas Lights

Christmas colorful lights on wooden table

Season’s Greetings, Everyone!

Have you had an opportunity to enjoy the Christmas lights during this holiday season?  I was thinking today how we never go look at the lights during the daytime.  Why?  Because the lights are at their best and most spectacular in the dark of night.

As we come to the close of 2015, we have had many reminders that our world is a dark place, and getting darker.  Our Savior was born in a world like ours, dark and hopeless.  He came to be, and give, Light and Hope.  He showed us the love of the Father as He lived, served and loved others with deep compassion, full of grace and truth.  As we celebrate His birth as well as His life, may we live, serve, and share His love with with grace and truth to those God places in our paths–and be lights shining in our dark world.

See you in 2016!  Blessings from Debby and Retreat-in-a-Bag

4 Reasons to Include a Book Table at your Women’s Event

Shopping Carts and Stack of Books (clipping path included)There are some who might say that reading books is a lost art.  Everything is digital   But books are still making the best seller lists.

At every retreat, and even some women’s events, we try to have a “book table” set up for the women to browse and buy solid Christian books that we recommend.  I have written a lot regarding this on this website (check out blog category “book table“), and even have a drop-down menu of recommended books under “Resources.”  Here are some reasons why this is a part of our  normal practice:

1.  Reading Christian books, in addition to regular Bible reading and study, can foster spiritual growth.

2.  Women who like to read don’t always make the best choices of reading material; we like to make books available which will encourage and edify and build up, as well as being doctrinally correct.

3.  Having a selection of good Christian books available (and possibly doing book reviews at the event) encourages women to broaden their reading options to include biographies and other genres that perhaps they don’t normally read.

4.  Often we can get books at a wholesale or discounted price, and sell at or close to cost, which makes purchasing books more affordable for our ladies. We also include used and donated books which women can “purchase” for a donation of any amount.
